In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed...

U.S. Constitution, Amendment VI

Since 1973, Justice has been part of our name, because Justice is our goal . . . From our initial membership of 60 lawyers, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice has grown to over 2,000 members and is the country's largest statewide organization of criminal defense lawyers and allied professionals. When defense team members and their clients need a strong advocate for justice in the legislature, the courts and the media, CACJ is there.

CACJ's membership includes both attorneys and associated professionals throughout California and in other states. Through its membership, CACJ continues to be the statewide association of its kind in the country.

Membership is vital to support a number of CACJ's programs and initiatives throughout the year. Membership support is particularly important for CACJ's legislative and amicus efforts.

The specific purposes of CACJ are:

  1. to defend the rights of persons as guaranteed by the United States Constitution, the Constitution of the State of California and other applicable law;
  2. to preserve due process and equal protection of the law for the benefit of all persons; to enhance the ability of its members to discharge their professional responsibilities through educational programs, publications and mutual assistance; and
  3. to protect and foster the independence of the criminal defense lawyer and to improve the quality of the administration of criminal law.
