Matt Cherry, Mike Farrell, Nancy Haydt & Robert Sanger for Prop 62
There are people in our world who serve as inspirations. Those who care
about the people that nobody else cares about. That society has shunned,
hated, persecuted and sentenced to death. Those that love the unloved
and unlovable - people convicted of the most despised acts in our society.
Matt Cherry, Mike Farrell, Nancy Haydt, and Robert Sanger are those people.
Through their tireless, persistent efforts, they bring hope and use their
own resources, time, intellect, passion and determination, influence and
legal training to save the lives of our clients.
How many of our clients on death row were born addicted to drugs, abused,
had alcohol placed in their baby bottles, or experienced trauma at the
hands of those who should be expected to protect them? Were born into
poverty or lived with prejudice? How many are learning disabled or mentally
ill? How many of our clients on death row call themselves a monster?
Or just as importantly, how many proclaim their innocence while waiting
for their turn to die for a crime they didn't commit?
Which is why it is so important to effectively take on the issue of the
Death Penalty head-on. To be effective, it takes people like Matt Cherry,
Mike Farrell, Nancy Haydt, and Robert Sanger. Through victories large
and small, it is through the efforts of these caring people that lives
are being saved. Lives that can still be productive, whose families won't
have to mourn their early loss. And for whom, certainty and closure of
their criminal cases won't take years and years. Where the state is
saving money by not seeking death sentences. Where minorities are not
over-represented in death sentences. Where restorative justice is in practice.
California Attorneys for Criminal Justice fully supports and endorses their
fight and is proud to recognize Matt Cherry, Mike Farrell, Nancy Haydt,
and Robert Sanger for their tireless work on behalf of our clients and
all of California.
